History
At first you could find the St.Bernard at Hospiz, a sacred Bernard
monastery. The monks set out to search for people who were
stranded and brought those people back to the monastery. People
think that the St.Bernard was given to the monks for protection.

Later on it turned out that the dogs had a natural gift at their
disposal. Apparentely they felt the incoming danger of an
avalanche or a snowstorm. The monks noticed this because the
dogs were restless and indicated they wanted to go outside. The
dogs could smell and search for persons at long distance. One of
the most famous dogs is Barry.

At first you had the St.Bernard with short hair. Later on the
St.Bernard with long hair arose when a St.Bernard with short
hair interbreeded with a New Foundlander.

St.Bernards with long hair were not used to save persons in the
snow. The reason is that the snow became ice because of the
cold. The ice got stuck in the hairs of the St.Bernard. The
St.Bernard with long hair stayed in the valley.
