Saint Bernard and children |
By defenition you can never leave your dog alone with your children. when your child gets bitten or worse in such a situation you yourself are responsible and the dog has acted in accordance with his behaviour as a wolf. In nature only a submissive animal goes to a higher order. A small child who crawls can be seen as a submissive creature by a dog upon which the dag can growl at the child. This means the child should not get any closer. Eventually behaviour of bitting can be shown. However a St.Bernard is not agressive of nature, but can see a child as a submissive creature just like any other dog. Naturally a St.Bernard does not have to display this behaviour, but you have to take into consideration that it could be possible. We may or can not expect that dogs think before they act, however we can and may expect that from you. A St.Bernard has a protective character with regard to his own people, but certainly also to children. Our own pups are raised in the presence of small and larger children. Our St.Bernard play with our children, the children of others and also with dogs of other breeds. But the playing is only done in our presence. |
